A basic DIAL system is controlled via a Surface Control System (SCS) which provides the basics: downhole pressures, control of DIAL Units, and communication with the operator’s SCADA system.
The DIU serves as an additional interface between the SCS and the SCADA system that offers additional processing power and functionality, including:

Reading surface gauges

Communicating with other information sources on the SCADA system

Seamless integration of Silverwell’s DIAL system with non-standard communication protocols
DIUs are typically installed as stand-alone units which would be installed in addition to an SCS, but they can be integrated into the SCS housing in some situations.
